The Shire is close to the city on a map and further in practice. Everything heading north crosses Tom Uglys or Captain Cook Bridge, and both back up from late afternoon. A run that takes thirty minutes at midday can take an hour at six on a Friday.
We plan Shire bookings around that single fact. If the venue is over the bridge we leave earlier and take the crossing before the worst of it rather than after. If the venue is local, which many Shire formals are, the bridge never enters the picture and the whole night stays inside the Shire.
Cronulla is the other constant. The beachfront and Woolooware Bay are the photo stops most groups ask for, and they are genuinely worth building the schedule around in formal season. Year 12 groups splitting one vehicle is standard here, and across Shire distances it saves more than it does closer in.
